GREEN PARTY OF MARICOPA COUNTY (GPMC) TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONWIDE DAY OF ACTION (MAY 30TH) FOR H.R. 676 (A NATIONAL, SINGLE-PAYER, HEALTHCARE SYSTEM)

Scottsdale, AZ—The Green Party of Maricopa County (GPMC) is organizing in support of H.R. 676 (the United States National Health Insurance Act). Thousands of supporters for single-payer healthcare will participate in a Nationwide Day of Action on Saturday, May 30th, 2009. Locally, single-payer activists will gather at 10:00am in front of the office of Arizona Congressman Harry Mitchell (7201 E. Camelback Rd., Scottsdale 85251). “Unlike Representatives Ed Pastor (CD 4) and Raul Grijalva (CD 7), Harry Mitchell has not signed on as a co-sponsor of H.R. 676. The time has come to change our inefficient and costly healthcare system”, says GPMC co-chair Angel Torres.

According to the Physicians for a National Health Program (www.pnhp.org), over 45 million Americans have no health insurance, and millions more are inadequately covered. H.R. 676 was introduced by Representatives John Conyers (D-MI) and Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), and has 75 co-sponsors in Congress. The bill would create a publicly-financed, privately delivered healthcare system. “Good, quality healthcare should not be conditional on whether you have a job, how much money you make, or your health status. H.R. 676 will cover all Americans and save us billions of dollars”, says GPMC media spokesperson Eric Andersen.

GPMC is working in coalition with other single-payer health care activists, unions, faith organizations and student groups to build support for H.R. 676 in Arizona and across the nation. Folks that want to join this campaign should call (602) 417-0213 or e-mail mcgp@maricopagreens.org.
