Newsletter - 2007 - February

Date: February 18, 2007
To: Maricopa Greens
From: Angel Torres, Green Party of Maricopa County (GPMC) co-chair
Topic: GPMC February 2007-News U Can Use

1) The next GPMC General Membership meeting will be Sunday, February 25th, 2007 from 2:30pm to 4:30pm (Steering Committee meeting at 1:15pm) at the Spanish Place Language Studio in Tempe, AZ.  The address is 3400 S. Mill Avenue, Suite 31 on the southwest corner of Mill Avenue & Southern Road (across the street from the Gentle Strength Cooperative).  We will be electing new GPMC officers & Steering Committee for 2008-09.  Snacks & drinks will be provided.  Please RSVP to if you plan to attend.

2) GPMC (Uncle Sunflower) Needs You!  We need folks willing to volunteer 2-5 hours per week to serve as officers, steering committee members & serve on our various sub-committees.  Here are the positions available:  GPMC co-chair (female), term expires Feb. 2009; Secretary/Recorder, term expires Feb. 2009; Treasurer, term expires Feb. 2009; 4 at-large Steering Committee positions, terms expire Feb. 2008.  We also need volunteers to assist on the following sub-committees: Ballot Access, By-laws, Database/Website, Fundraising, Media Outreach/Publicity, Membership Outreach (Marketing), Political Campaigns, and Youth Caucus.  If interested, please contact GPMC co-chair Angel Torres by e-mail: , or by phone: (602) 305-7496.

3) The Arizona Green Party (Aunt Sunflower) also Needs You!  AZGP is pursuing ballot status for the 2008 elections.  We need to collect approximately 30,000 signatures on ballot petitions in order to achieve this goal!  We are looking for at least 100 volunteers to collect 15 signatures (one petition) per week (2 petitions/week is even better).  In a good location, it should take about 1 hour to fill out a petition.  Petition circulators must be registered voters here in Arizona (you do not have to be registered Green).  Petition signers must also be registered Arizona voters (they do not have to be registered Green), and must only sign petitions for their county of residence (examples: A Maricopa County voter should only sign a petition that is for Maricopa County; a Yavapai County voter should only sign a petition that is for Yavapai County; etc).  There are a number of events & locations you may collect signatures (always get permission first): city libraries; Tempe Empty Bowls (Sat. Feb. 24th from 11am to 2pm @ Tempe Town Lake); 2007 Blues Blast (Sun. Feb. 25th from 11am to 6pm @ the Mesa Amphitheater); 9-11 Accountability conference (Feb. 23rd-25th at the San Marcos Resort in Chandler); Phoenix Farmers Market (every Saturday from 8am to 1pm, Central & McKinley); Climb to Conquer Cancer walk (Sat. Feb. 24th at South Mountain Park from 8am until ?); Matsuri Festival (Feb. 24th-25th at Heritage Square-downtown Phoenix, 10am to 5pm); Sunday A'Fair (every Sunday afternoon through the end of April at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts/Civic Center Plaza); Arizona Renaissance Festival (every weekend until April 1st-Apache Junction/Golds Canyon).  As you see, there is no lack of events/locations to petition.  Please help your Tia Sunflower to collect these signatures!  If interested, please contact GPMC Petition coordinator Richard Scott at or phone (480) 990-8531.

4) Are you interested in learning how to build a "green" home, or how to refurbish your home using "green building" techniques?  Check out Building Green TV.  The program airs Saturday mornings at 10:30am on Channel 8 (PBS).  You can also visit their website at www.buildinggreentv.com.  If you need "green building" materials or products, visit our friend Mick Dalrymple and his store, A.k.a. Green, at 8100 E. Indian School Road in Scottsdale or phone (480) 945-0310.

5) Fundraising: GPMC wants you to put your dollars where your values are!  The Green Party-US (www.gp.org) needs our assistance to raise funds.  Here is how you can help (as a reminder, all donations to the Green Party are NOT tax-deductible):
· Become a "card-carrying" Green for $36/year (www.gp.org/greenpartycard).  50% of the funds come back to our state party (Arizona Green Party).  You will also receive a Green Party button, bumper sticker, and a 1-year subscription to our newspaper, Green Pages.  We would like another 30 GPMC members to become a "card-carrying" Green during the months of February & March 2007
· Become a sustainer (monthly/quarterly).  You have a choice on whether to share your donation with our state party.  We would like to see 40 GPMC members consider becoming a monthly sustainer at $5/month (visit www.gp.org/donate for more info)
· Purchase Green Party merchandise.  Visit www.gp.org/merchandise for the latest in t-shirts, buttons, key chains, pennants, etc.
· Consider donating a portion of your tax refund to the Green Party-US.  Perhaps 20 GPMC members will donate $50 or more?
· Work one day of overtime at work and donate the funds to the Green Party-US.
· Are you receiving funds from an estate, structured settlement or sale of stock/luxury item?  Consider donating a portion of the proceeds to GP-US.
· GPMC would like to organize a yard/garage sale sometime soon (perhaps March/April 2007).  Do you have experience in organizing one, and would you like to volunteer your home as a location?  Begin collecting your items, and GPMC will split the proceeds with GP-US.
If you have any questions about donations to GP-US, please contact Emily Citkowski at 1-866-41-GREEN or e-mail her: Emily@gp.org.

6) Earth Day 2007 (April 22nd) is quickly approaching.  Do you have any ideas on how we can celebrate this event locally?  Perhaps you have experience in organizing an event?  If so, please contact GPMC co-chair Angel Torres by e-mail: or phone: (602) 305-7496.
